Cold frames are a wonderful addition to a home garden because they allow a home gardener to extend the growing season and even harvest fresh vegetables in the winter!
We've had a cold frame in our garden for a few years now and have had great success with it. We use it for different reasons, some are:
-
Growing cold tolerant vegetables in the winter (i.e. carrots, arugula, mache)
-
Hardening off seedlings before transplanting into the garden
-
Extending the fall growing season by retaining heat and protecting from wind thus allowing for a greater harvest (ie. broccoli and brussel sprouts)
At Home Organic Farms carries Palram cold frams in single and double sizes. They are both made from rust resistant materials and are a snap to put together.
